Salt - A powerful symbol



Mahatma Gandhi found Salt to be a powerful symbol 

He sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin Stating 11 demands on 31st January 1930.

One major demand was to abolish the Salt Tax as Salt was one of the most essential food item.

Irwin was unwilling to negotiate .

Gandhiji started his famous Salt March from Sabarmati to Dandi (240 miles) Thousands came to listen to Gandhiji where ever he stopped. He asked them to peacefully defy the British.

On 6 th April , he reached Dandi and ceremonially violated the law manufacturing salt by boiling sea water.

  This scene is taking about the miserable state of Antonio. He was allowed to leave the jail for a short period. Shylock pleads the guard to have a close watch on Antonio. Antonio's request for a mercy was completely ignored by Shylock. The Jew was keen to avenge all the wrongs done to him. He repeatedly claims "I will have my bond". He also adds that once Antonio called him a dog so now he has to suffer his fangs. Shylock also complains that Antonio is shown favouritism. Antonio decides not to plead any more. Solanio  hopes for some mercy from the Duke but the Duke is helpless as he is duty bound to the strict rules of Venice. If the laws are violated and justice is denied Venice which is dependent on the international trade will lose its credibility.  Antonio's last wish is to see his friend Bassanio just once while discharging his debt.
