Present Tenses (CBSE,ICSE)




Tenses are used to indicate time.

There are three types of Tenses

  • Present Tense- Talks about the Present Times
  • Past Tense - Talks about the Present Times
  • Future tense- Talks about the Future Times.
The Present Tense is further classified into following four types

Present Simple Tense or Present Indefinite Tense

Mohan goes to school regularly.

My father reads newspaper every morning.

The sun rises in the east

Subject +present form of the verb + object

First , second person (singular and plural )and third person (plural)  (I, we, you ,they) do not take "s" or "es" after the verb.

I go, you eat, They play etc.

Third person singular number ( He, she, it or any name)takes "s" or "es" after the verb.

He goes, she goes, Neha reads, It sleeps

This Tense is used to indicate :

  • Regular Activity 
  • Universal Truth

Indicating words: every day , every week , every month, frequently, regularly, often, daily

1.The earth --------- (move) round the sun and the sun -------------- (give) us light.
2.Mukesh ------------------------- (go /goes/went) to bed at 10 pm.
3.You ---------------------- (eat/eats/eaten) rice everyday.
4. The boys ---------------------(play/plays/ played) cricket everyday.  

Present Continuous Tense:

Something is going on at the present moment

We are reading English now.
The teacher is teaching at present.
We are attending this class at the moment.

Subject +am/is/are+ verb + ing + object

(I am,You are, They are ,He/she/it/Any name  is)

Indicating words: now , at present, currently, at the moment, right now.

We ----------------- (attend) a class now.
He ----------------------(teach) some children at present
She ---------------------(write) a letter  to her brother at the moment.  


Present Perfect Tense:
Something is just over but the after effect is still Present.

I have already taken my lunch .
I have already had my lunch. 
They have  not yet returned.

Subject +have/has+v3+ object
(I/we/you/they- have; he/she/it- has)

Indicating words: already , just , just now, two minutes ago, yet.

1. I have ----------------- (complete) my home works.
2. They ---------------------- just---------------(return) from the market.
3. He ---------------- (be) already seen this movie. 


Present Perfect Continuous Tense:

Something  started earlier and is still continuing 

It has been raining since morning .
Sita has been sleeping since afternoon.

Subject +has been / have been + verb + ing + object.

Mohan -------------------------- (sleep) since 2 pm .

Raju --------------------------- (sing) for last two hours

Sir, Through this letter of mine, I wish to draw the attention of everyone towards the increased dependence of humans on technology. Everyone irrespective of a child or an adult , wants gadgets like cell phones, I pod , laptop etc. No doubt technology is a boon to mankind and has a great future ahead, but in my opinion we should not depend on it as excess of everything is bad. It is making everyone lazy. On the other hand , cyber crimes are also growing . The key word for this is caution.  We must make judicious use of technology and should not completely depend on it. These devices are not good for our brain, eyes ,ears and our overall health. We must believe in natural and simple living.
